Abuja, Nigeria 15 February 2019: The head of the African Union Electoral Observation Mission (AUEOM) to Nigeria, Mr. Hailemariam Desalegn is today holding his final round of meetings with stakeholders in the Nigerian general elections to take place on Saturday 16th February 2019. Since the mission’s deployment, Mr. Desalegn has been receiving updates from various stakeholders including political parties, the electoral commission, civil society, government officials and other observer groups.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 14 February, 2019: The 2016 Global Estimates of Child Labour indicate that Africa is the region of high prevalence of child labour. One-fifth (20%) of all African children are involved in child labour, a proportion more than twice as high as in any other region. Nine per cent of African children are in hazardous work, again highest of all the world’s regions.

African Union Commission Expands its knowledge Resource Capacity

Addis Ababa, Febuary 09 2019: The Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission Amb. Kwesi Quartey has received a donation about 22,000 books from “Books for Africa” organization. Under the theme “Promoting Reading Culture in Africa”, the books on various disciplines will enrich the resource capacity of the African Union Commission library and greatly impact the quality of its knowledge products. The African Union Commission library is a resource centre for the staff of the Commission, AU Organs and the member states.

Addis Ababa 11th February 2019: The African Union gave out the Kwame Nkrumah Awards for Scientific Excellence for the continental and regional winners during the 2019 Assembly of the Heads of State and Government. H.E Prof. Sarah Anyang Agbor, Commissioner for Human Resources, Science and Technology said that the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Excellence Awards are awarded at three levels - national, regional and continental with the objective to honour the African men and women who have distinguished themselves through their contribution in Science for African development.

African Union leaders adopt the Treaty for the establishment of the African Medicine Agency (AMA)

Addis Ababa, 11th February 2019: The African Union Heads of State and Government adopted the treaty for the establishment of the African Medicine Agency (AMA) during their 32nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly on 11 February 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The African Medicine Agency, once ratified by member states will serve as the continental regulatory body that will provide regulatory leadership, to ensure that there are harmonized and strengthened regulatory systems, which govern the regulation of medicines and medical products on the African continent.

African Union Adopts Transitional Justice Policy

Addis Ababa, 12 February 2019: The 32nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Union adopts the AU Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP). The Policy is a continental guideline for AU Member States to achieve sustainable peace, justice, reconciliation, social cohesion and healing in line with Article 4 (o) of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, which calls for peaceful resolution of conflicts, respect for the sanctity of human life, and the condemnation and rejection of impunity.
