H.E President William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya and the African Union Champion on Institutional Reform. H.E. Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

Addis Ababa, 14 August 2017 –Following a weeklong working session which saw the AUC and representatives of the South Sudanese Government work together to critically review the draft legal instruments on the Hybrid Court of South Sudan (HCSS), both sides acknowledged that the finalization of the legal instruments was a significant part of the process towards establishing the Hybrid Court for South Sudan.

On 10 August, 2017 we, the AU Election Observer Mission (AUEOM) observing the Kenyan General Elections, issued our Preliminary Statement following the 8 August 2017 Elections as conducted in Kenya.
Among others we said:
“…we can say that the processes we were able to observe, up to and including the counting of the votes at the polling stations and their transmission to the IEBC etc, met the standards set by the Republic of Kenya and the AU for the conduct of democratic elections…
Addis Ababa, 15 August 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat has approved the deployment of an African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) to the general elections scheduled to place in the Republic of Angola on 23 August 2017.
14 August 2017 – Nairobi, Kenya , The 4th African Union Commission (AUC) Africa Mining Vision Technical Working Group meeting on Geological and Mineral Information opened yesterday in Nairobi.
AU finance ministers met between 07-09 August 2017 to accelerate implementation of the decisions of the Assembly of Heads of States and Government in Johannesburg (2015) and Kigali (2016) and Addis Abeba (2107) to ensure the Union’s financial autonomy by 2020. They committed to the following road map as articulated in the following communique:
Addis Ababa, 12 August 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AU) Moussa Faki Mahamat takes note of the official announcement of the final results of the presidential election in Kenya on 11 August 2017 by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following the General Elections on 8 August 2017, which were deemed credible and transparent by all observer missions, including the one deployed by the AU. He calls on all those who wish to challenge these results to do so through the channels provided for by the law.

These polls were observed by an AU Election Observer Mission led by former President Mbeki of South Africa.
