Commissioner Tumusiime urges AU leaders to champion the cause of aflatoxin mitigation on the continent

October 11, 2016, Entebbe, Uganda – AUC Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, H.E Tumusiime Rhoda Peace, yesterday urged African leaders to continue to champion the cause of aflatoxin mitigation in order to create policies and an enabling environment that would allow for evidence based action plans to be implemented by various stakeholders.

 

AU Extraordinary Summit of the PRC on Maritime Security, Safety and Development opens in Lomé, Togo

Lomé, Togo, 11 October 2016: Members of the Permanent Representative Committee (PRC) of the African Union (AU) began meeting in the Extraordinary Summit of the Assembly on Maritime Security, Safety and Development on 11 October 2016, in Lomé, Republic of Togo. The members of the PRC examined the Draft African Union Charter on Maritime Security, Safety and Development and recommended it for further consideration by the Executive Council and subsequent adoption by the Summit.

  Addis Ababa, 21 January 2014- The African Union Commission (AUC) awarded prices to two female top African scientists: Prof. Merzouk Hafida from Algeria representing the North region and Prof. Yalemtsehay Mekonnen from Ethiopia, representing the East region, for their scientific achievements and valuable discoveries and findings that has contributed to the development agenda of the Continent.

Addis Ababa, 07 October 2016: The Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Erastus J.O. Mwencha, has signed, on behalf of the AUC, a Joint Partnership Agreement (JPA) with the Permanent Representatives of Australia, Canada, Sweden and the United States of America. The partnership agreement was supported by Spain and the United Kingdom and seeks to support the work of the Women, Gender and Development Directorate (WGDD) to implement its mandate of promoting gender equality and women empowerment.

Inauguration of the Julius Nyerere Peace and Security Building

Addis Ababa, 12 October 2016: The Commission of the African Union (AU) inaugurated, yesterday, 11 October 2016, its new ‘’Julius Nyerere Peace and Security Building’’, at the AU Headquarters, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Julius Nyerere Peace and Security building, which was named after one of the foremost Pan Africanists and peacebuilders, was funded by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, at a cost of about 31 million Euros.

AU sympathises with victims of Hurricane Matthew

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 7 October 2016: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma sends her deepest sympathies for the destruction and loss of life caused by Hurricane Matthew that hit the Caribbean on 7 October and the State of Florida in the United States this week.

 Hurricane Matthew is reported to be the most powerful storm to hit the Caribbean in a decade, causing the death of over 300 people thus far.   

African Union commends the private sector for historic launch of the Africa Healthcare Federation

Nairobi, 11 October 2016- Chapters of the Africa Health Care Federations from the five AU regions on Friday met to launch the Africa Healthcare Federation. This overarching organisation will represent the private sector in collaboration with governments and development partners.
