Taxing the digital economy: COVID-19 heightens need to expand resource mobilization base

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to the fore, the focus on the rapidly growing shift to a digitalised economy across the globe. The social and economic lockdowns imposed by government worldwide has pushed many individuals and companies onto online platforms to conduct their business. While other sectors of the economy have come to a standstill, the digital sector has boomed. This has huge implications for business models going forward, and makes it even more urgent that solutions be found for the taxation of the digital economy that are equitable for source and market jurisdictions.

The outgoing Norwegian Permanent Representative to the African Union, H.E. Mr. Morten Aasland paid a farewell call on H.E. Mr. Kwesi Quartey, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) at AU Headquarters as he ends his tour of duty.

After the exchange of pleasantries, the Deputy Chairperson congratulated Ambassador Aasland for his successful tour of duty in Africa’s diplomatic capital - Addis Ababa and commended his sterling contribution towards strengthening the existing diplomatic, political as well as economic relations between Norway and Africa.

Africa Urged to Avoid Prevention Fatigue as Countries Begin to Ease Lockdowns

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, AfricaCDC has urged the continent to avoid coronavirus "prevention fatigue".

At a media conference on Thursday 20th August, Director of the AfricaCDC, Dr John Nkengasong noted “a slight decrease” in infection rates on the continent, and said this "gives some signs of hope that we are beginning to bend the curve slowly".

COVID-19 threatens to reverse progress in birth registrations: strategies for counter-actions

17th August 2020: In Africa, nearly one in two children are deprived from a legal existence. Countries such as Algeria and Tunisia top the list of countries that have impressively reached the targeted 100 per cent of birth registration. The trend of increasing registration of children at birth, also reflects in West and Central Africa, where over the past three years, the regional average of children under-5 registered, increased from 45 per cent to 53 per cent, equaling up to 8.6 million more children registered.
