Addis Ababa, 1 September 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat takes note of the Judgement of Supreme Court of the Republic of Kenya delivered on 1 September 2017 nullifying the result of the Presidential Election held on 8 August 2017. He further takes note of the order by the Supreme Court to hold fresh presidential election within a period of 60 days as per the Constitution.

On 10 August, 2017 we, the AU Election Observer Mission (AUEOM) observing the Kenyan General Elections, issued our Preliminary Statement following the 8 August 2017 Elections as conducted in Kenya.

Among others we said:

“…we can say that the processes we were able to observe, up to and including the counting of the votes at the polling stations and their transmission to the IEBC etc, met the standards set by the Republic of Kenya and the AU for the conduct of democratic elections…

Addis Ababa, 12 August 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AU) Moussa Faki Mahamat takes note of the official announcement of the final results of the presidential election in Kenya on 11 August 2017 by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following the General Elections on 8 August 2017, which were deemed credible and transparent by all observer missions, including the one deployed by the AU. He calls on all those who wish to challenge these results to do so through the channels provided for by the law.

Addis Ababa, 10 August 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AU) Moussa Faki Mahamat, congratulates the people of Kenya for the conduct of peaceful General Elections on 8 August 2017. These polls were observed by an AU Election Observer Mission led by former President Mbeki of South Africa.

The Statement will be delivered by His Excellency, Thabo Mbeki, former President of the
Republic of South Africa and Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission

The 2017 General Elections in the Republic of Kenya will take place tomorrow, August 8.

We, the African Union Election Observer Mission (AUEOM), take this opportunity to wish the sister people of Kenya peaceful, free, fair and transparent elections.

We are happy that in this regard we echo an aspiration shared by the people of Kenya as a whole, including the political parties and the candidates concerned.

We say this informed by commitments made directly to us, and publicly to the people of Kenya, by the various stakeholders.
