Addis Ababa, 20 November 2015: The African Union Commission has redeployed a small team of six (6) election experts to observe the second phase of the Arab Republic of Egypt’s parliamentary elections scheduled to take place in thirteen (13) Governorates or provinces on 22-23 November 2015.

It could be recalled that, following an invitation from the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the High Election Committee in Egypt, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Her Excellency Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, approved the deployment of a short-term election observation (STO) mission to the first phase of the 2015 parliamentary elections in Egypt, which took place in fourteen (14) Governorates on 18-19 October. The African Union STO mission was launched on 9 October 2015 and was headed by His Excellency Prof. Amos Sawyer, former President of the Republic of Liberia. At the conclusion of the first phase of the elections, the AU Election Observation Mission released a preliminary statement of its key findings and conclusions of the elections on 21 October 2015. The preliminary statement can be accessed from the AUC website (http://pa.au.int/en/sites/default/files/PRESS%20STATEMENT%20FOR%20IMMEDI...).

The AU election expert mission to Egypt serves to demonstrate the African Union Commission’s commitment to strengthening democratic development on the continent by engaging in the electoral processes of Member States and ensuring that elections are conducted credibly and in an environment devoid of violence.

The observation and findings of the election expert mission will contribute to the release of a Final Report, which will provide an in-depth assessment of the overall conduct of the two phases of the elections and will contain recommendations for consideration by Egyptian stakeholders for improvement of future electoral processes in the country.
