Background
The financial and sovereign debt crises emphasized the need for better financial reporting by governments worldwide, and the need for improvements in the management of public sector resources. The continuing aftermath of these crises has reinforced these needs and has increased the pressure on governments and public sector organizations to better manage public resources.

April 24, 2018: Nouakchott, Mauritania: The Department of Political Affairs of the African Union Commission and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), in conjunction with the Secretariat of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRIS) organized consultative meetings on the effective implementation of the ACHPR Decisions and the Draft African Union Ten-Year Human and Peoples’ Rights Action Plan respectively in Nouakchott, Mauritania from 23-24 April 2018.
Africa making major policy strides in agriculture
26th April 2018, Libreville, Gabon - Over 100 top African agricultural experts met in the Gabonese capital – Libreville, from April 23th, to assess lessons learned and policy implications from the inaugural Biennial Review (BR) Report on the implementation of the 2014 Malabo Declaration on Accelerated Agricultural Growth and Transformation for Shared Prosperity and Improved Livelihoods. The report was presented to the AU Heads of State and Government at the AU Summit in January 2018.

Addis Ababa, 27 April 2018: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, learnt with deep sorrow the demise, on 26 April 2018, of Professor Adebayo Adedeji, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) from 1975 to 1991.

The Commissioner expressed gratitude to Mrs. Wallström for organizing this timely meeting and recognized the powerful role of the Swedish feminist movement at the helm of the women struggle for gender equality and women empowerment.
