Ms Nardos Bekele-Thomas, Takes Office as New CEO of The African Union Development Agency-NEPAD

Ms Bekele-Thomas is the first woman to lead the African Union’s development agency. She was appointment and endorsed as the new Chief Executive Officer of AUDA-NEPAD by the African Union Heads of State and Government during the Thirty-Fifth Ordinary Session of the African Union summit, in February 2022. She succeeds Dr Ibrahim Assane Mayaki as CEO of AUDA-NEPAD.

A team from the African Union Commission (AUC’s) Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Unit recently undertook a joint mission together with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to assess drought situations in three provinces within Southern Angola. This followed by an invitation from the government of Angola from 22-29 April 2022.

The African Union Commission, through the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Unit, participated in the just ended Sahel Regional Workshop in Dakar, Senegal from 26-29 April 2022. The overall objective of the regional workshop was to build the capacity of national and regional stakeholders on harmonisation of disaster risk data and information management systems at the national and regional level to promote risk-informed and sustainable development in western Sahel and in the Lake Chad Basin.

The launch of the first pilot program series on the use of the State Parties Assessment Tool (SPAT) on the implementation and reporting to the AU Charter on Public Service kicks off today, 10 May 2022 in Dar Es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania.

This capacity building aligns with the declaration of the Second Conference of State Parties to the Charter held on 29 April 2021 (Para 3) ‘inviting Tanzania, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia and Cameroun to pilot the operationalization of the SPAT’.
