Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2021) New Date Confirmed

Cairo/Kigali/Addis Ababa, 22 March 2021: – The second Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2021) is now set to take place from 8 to 14 December 2021. African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the African Union (AU) and the Government of Rwanda have decided to shift the date of the continental trade fair, which was previously scheduled to hold from 6 to 12 September 2021, to allow for a broader roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines across the continent and ensure that the event is held under the most optimal health conditions.

Addis Ababa, 22 March 2021: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, continues to monitor the developments in Somalia ahead of today's planned National Consultative Forum meeting to resolve the electoral impasse.

While the Chairperson is encouraged by the arrival in Mogadishu of leaders from all the Federal Member States, as well as other stakeholders, he is gravely concerned at reports that the meeting could take place without the participation all the FMS Presidents.

African Union Lauds Kenya's Court Ruling Against Female Genital Mutilation

The African Union Commission, Women, Gender and Youth Directorate, has lauded a decision by the High Court of the Republic of Kenya, dismissing a case in which a medical doctor had challenged the prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), arguing that it limited women’s choice and right to uphold their culture. The Court however on the 17th March 2021, ruled that the practice of FGM violates a woman’s right to health, human dignity and in instances when it results in death, the right to life, adding that the practice also undermines international human rights standards.

18 March 2021, Addis Ababa: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat has learnt with profound sadness of the untimely passing of H.E. John Pombe Magufuli, President of the United Republic of Tanzania. 

On behalf the African Union family, the Chairperson expresses his deepest condolences to the family of the late President Magufuli, and stands in solidarity and mourning with the Government and People of the United Republic of Tanzania during this difficult time of loss.
