AFREC Kicks Off Hands-On In-Country Smart Grid Training in Namibia

The African Energy Commission (AFREC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy of Namibia and the Namibian Energy Institute (NEI), has launched a five day in-person Smart Grid training in Windhoek to support Namibia’s development of a National Smart Grid Strategy to modernise electricity distribution, improve demand-side management, and integrate higher shares of renewable energy.

Namibia is the first beneficiary of AFREC’s in-person Smart Grid Training following a successful virtual rollout to all African Union (AU) Member States.

AFREC to Convene First-Ever Continental Energy Efficiency Conference

The African Energy Commission (AFREC) will host the inaugural African Energy Efficiency Conference (AfEEC) on 10–11 December 2025 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the framework of the African Energy Efficiency Alliance launched at COP29. The event will serve as a premier continental platform to advance energy efficiency as a catalyst for economic growth, sustainable development, and climate action across Africa.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, received H.E. Evgeny Terekhin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Ethiopia & Rep to the AU.

They exchanged on the AU–Russia cooperation, preparations for the 2nd Ministerial Conference of the Russia–Africa Partnership Forum, developments in the Sahel, the AU-led peacekeeping in Somalia, capacity-building initiatives.
They agreed to enhance coordination in amplifying Africa’s common position ahead of the Climate Summit in Brazil.

The delegation comprised representatives of the Pan African Women’s Organization (PAWO), the #Gender is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC), the Rapporteur of the AU STC on Gender Equality, & other distinguished delegates.

The delegation acknowledged Mr. Youssouf's steadfast advocacy for women’s inclusion & leadership within AU processes & across the continent.
