Addis Ababa, 20 November 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, today received the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the State of Libya in Ethiopia, Dr. Seddigh Elgwairy, to discuss the situation of African migrants in Libya, particularly reports of the auctioning of some migrants as slaves.

During his visit, the Deputy Chairperson is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on His Excellency Ian Khama, the President of the Republic of Botswana, to discuss among other issues, the ongoing institutional reforms of the African Union, the latest political developments in Zimbabwe and the upcoming African Union- European Union Summit.

Addis Ababa, 18 November 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has learned with dismay of reports on the auctioning of African migrants in Libya as slaves. Following the communiqué of the Chairperson of the Union, Professor Alpha Conde, he strongly condemns these despicable acts which are at odds with the ideals of the Founding Fathers of our Organization and relevant African and international instruments, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.
