Addis Ababa, 12 July 2018: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Moussa Faki Mahatma, has appointed H.E. Thomas Yayi Boni, the former President of the Republic of Benin to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) to the Republic of Mali.

Addis Ababa, 13 July 2018: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has appointed Professor Carlos Lopes as his High Representative to support Member States in the negotiation of a new agreement with the European Union post-2020, taking into account the expiration of the Cotonou Partnership Agreement and the decisions of the AU-EU Summit held in Abidjan in November of 2017. This appointment was welcomed by the just-concluded African Union Summit in Nouakchott.

Nairobi, June 9, Addis Ababa, 2018: Immigration Experts from African Union Member States met in Nairobi for a three-day technical meeting to fine-tune the draft guidelines for the design, production and issuance of the African Passport.

Article 10 of the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons calls for the adoption, production and issuance of the African Passport. The implementation roadmap provides the necessary action and time-frames for the adoption, production and issuance of the Passport, including convening of meetings of African Chiefs of Immigration to guide the process.

July 3, 2018; Nouakchott, Mauritania- The African Union has approved the 2019 budget for the Union at a total of $681.5 million, signaling a substantial decrease of the annual budget by 12%, compared to the previous year. The approved budget is in line with the continent’s move to reduce dependency on partner funding and gradually move towards funding 100% of the Union’s operational budget, 75% of the programme budget and 25% of peace support operations by 2021 with resources generated from the Continent.

Nouakchott, 7 July 2018: H.E. Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa and H.E. Mr. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, are the First Heads of State to Commit to Attending the High-Level Meeting on TB on 26th September.

The Presidents announced their commitment on Sunday at the opening of 31st African Union (AU) Heads of State Summit in Nouakchott, Mauritania. President Kagame currently holds the Chair of the Africa Union and hosted a meeting of nearly 20 African Heads of State to discuss the Common Africa Position on the High-Level Meeting (HLM) on TB.
