Statement by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on the Tragic Helicopter Crash in Ghana
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has learned with deep sorrow of the tragic helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region of the Republic of Ghana, which claimed the lives of eight people, including Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Hon. Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
Strengthening Africa’s Resilience: Key Outcomes from the 3rd AMHEWAS Technical Working Group and Steering Committee Meeting
The African Union Commission (AUC), through the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Unit of the Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy (SEBE) Directorate, convened the third governance and coordination meetings for the Africa Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Early Action System (AMHEWAS) Programme on disaster risk reduction. Hosted by the government of the Republic of Ghana, the Technical Working Group meeting took place from July 23 to 25, 2025, followed by the Steering Committee meeting on July 26 in Accra.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, participated in the Joint EAC-SADC Summit with the Panel of Facilitators on the DRC Peace Process in Nairobi today. The Summit was co-chaired by President William Ruto of Kenya, who and President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe.
The Summit endorsed the merger of EAC, SADC & AU peace structures into one Joint Mechanism, and adopted key frameworks to guide inclusive mediation. It was decided that the AU coordinate & ensure alignment of all regional and international efforts under an African-led process.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has arrived in Nairobi to attend the Joint Summit of the Co-Chairs of the EAC & SADC with the Panel of Facilitators on the DRC peace process.
Ahead of the Summit, he met with H.E. Prof. @rdussey, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Togo, who briefed him on the high-level meeting convened by H.E. President Faure Gnassingbé in Lomé in May, aimed at enhancing coordination among African-led mediation efforts.
