The African Union Commission (AUC) and the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA) jointly convened a virtual meeting of CEOs of African Power Utilities to discuss the impact of Covid-19 on the energy sector in Africa and in particular on power utility companies. The meeting was co-chaired by H.E. Dr. Amani ABOU-ZEID, AUC Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy and Mr. Patrick MWILA representing the President of the APUA.

African Union Youth Sector Response to COVID-19

The African Union Commission (AUC), Human Resources, Science, and Technology (HRST) Department, is working on practical responses to ensure young Africans are taking personal responsibility to stay safe and ensure others do too during the Coronavirus pandemic. The response takes on a 3 x 4 model which focuses on reducing the health risk on young Africans, minimizing the impact of Covid-19 on their lives and mobilizing youth to be responders to Covid-19. The tenets of the response will be carried out through engagement, communications campaigns, innovation and partnerships.

African Union Covid-19 Response Fund Board of Trustees Holds Inaugural Meeting

The board of the African Union’s COVID19 Response Fund held their first meeting, online, on 27th April.

AU Commission Chairperson Mr Moussa Faki Mahamat informed the newly nominated COVID-19 board of trustees that the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) estimates that implementation of the Africa Continental Strategy on COVID-19 will require USD $420 million over the next six months”.

The Chairperson highlighted that the Union is using the economic, humanitarian and health dimensions as to get through the global pandemic.

The Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2020) Postponed due to COVID-19

Cairo, 29 April 2020: – In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the African Union (AU) and the Government of Rwanda have decided to postpone by one year the second Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2020) initially set to take place from 1 to 7 September 2020 in Kigali, Rwanda.

This decision was endorsed by the IATF2020 Advisory Council during its sixth meeting held virtually on 26 April 2020, after careful assessment of the situation.
