H.E President William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya and the African Union Champion on Institutional Reform. H.E. Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

The first Ministerial Summit on Africa’s energy future jointly organized by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) was held today with a rallying call to embrace and invest more in technological innovation in the Energy sector to develop Africa’s energy future.
The African Union has embarked on communication, visibility and branding activities that have expanded and strengthened its outreach. Through the AU Commission’s Directorate of Information and Communication, the Union has enhanced its internal and external communications functions, to increase efficiency and connectivity with African citizenry and stakeholders, in making available up-to-date information on the implementation and impact of Agenda 2063 projects, programmes and activities.
Nairobi, Kenya, June 12, 2019: Legislators from the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) of the East African Community (EAC), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, have convened in Nairobi to deliberate on the acceleration of the ratification process and entry into force of the Protocol relating to the free movement of persons in Africa before the end of year 2020.
At the Africa@Nor-Shipping 2019 conference held under the theme “Unleashing the potential of Africa’s Blue Economy”, the African Union Commission reiterated the need to create an enabling framework for the development of Africa’s blue economy while ensuring environmental and economic sustainability and improving maritime safety and security in Africa’s waters.
Africa has made commendable progress in securing deposits of instruments of ratification on the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The agreement officially entered into force on the 30th of March 2019 with twenty four (24) instruments of ratification deposited with the African Union Commission. The African Union is setting the pace for the launch of the operational phase of the operational phase of the continental market in July this year. To build on this momentum and deepen the continental economic integration, the African Union Ministers of Trade (AMOT) held a two-day meeting in preparation for the upcoming Extraordinary Summit on AfCFTA in Niamey, Niger.

Nairobi, Kenya, 26 May 2019: The New Urban Agenda shows that by 2050, the world’s urban population is expected to nearly double. It further shows that populations, economic activities, social and cultural interactions, as well as environmental and humanitarian impacts, are increasingly concentrated in cities, posing sustainability challenges in terms of housing, infrastructure, basic services, food security, health, education, decent jobs, safety and natural resources, among others.
Though significant improvements have been noted in the governance trends in the continent, a number of cases still remain an area of concern for the African Union.
