1.    Following the Decision of the Summit of the ECOWAS Authority taken on 17th December 2016 in Abuja, Nigeria, Mediation efforts, including visits to Banjul, were undertaken by the Chair of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, HE President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the Mediator, HE  President Muhammadu Buhari and Co-Mediator on The Gambia, HE former President John Dramani Mahama, along with HE President Ernest Bai Koroma to mediate on the political impasse with Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya A. J. J. Jammeh.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 21 January 2017: The African Union Commission Chairperson, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has welcomed the decision of Mr Yahya Jammeh to step-down and depart from the presidency of The Gambia in a bloodless transition of power. The transition is significant in that it is the first peaceful transfer of power in the Islamic Republic of The Gambia since the country’s independence in 1965.

L’année 2016 a été particulièrement riche en événements pour la Commission de l’Union africaine alors qu’elle poursuit ses efforts dans la mise en œuvre du premier Plan décennal de mise en œuvre de l’Agenda 2063 de l’Afrique. Nous avons été très heureux de constater les initiatives prises par les États membres de l’Union africaine ainsi que les Communautés économiques régionales afin d’intensifier l’internalisation de l’Agenda 2063.
