African Union Chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma to Arrive in Zimbabwe on 24 July ahead of the General Elections

Harare, 23 July 2013- African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will arrive in Harare on 24 July 2013 at 12:15. Her presence is to support the AU mission that has been deployed to Zimbabwe, and to reassure the Zimbabwean people of the AU’s commitment to democratic stability through credible elections on the continent.

The media are invited to a photo opportunity and to record a statement from the Chairperson upon her arrival.

An African Union Long Term Observer Mission has been in Zimbabwe since 15 June 2013 at the approval of the AUC Chairperson. They were subsequently joined by Sixty (60) Short Term Observers on 20 July 2013. This is in line with the AU's commitment to the people of Zimbabwe in ensuring democratic stability through credible elections on the continent, as contained in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance; the African Union Declaration on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa and the African Union Guidelines on Election Observation and Monitoring Missions.
