10th Africa Regional Conference for World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts holds in Lagos: AUC Chairperson delivers keynote address

11th August, 2013 Lagos, Nigeria: Delegates have gathered for the 10th Africa Regional Conference of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girls Scouts in Lagos, Nigeria, and are excitedly gearing up to a keynote address by H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

Under the Conference theme, “African Young Women: Soaring Towards Excellence,” the AU Commission Chairperson will share her vision of the empowerment of girls and young women, and the responsibilities of African societies and adults to accompany, support and enable girls and young women to reach their potential and contribute as valued members of their families, communities and societies.

“The World Association supports girls and young women to develop confidence and life skills through self- development, challenge and adventure. Girl Guides and Girl Scouts are leaders who speak out on issues important to them, making a difference in their communities both locally and globally.”

During the event, Dr. Dlamini Zuma will be honoured with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) illustrious 'Award for Woman of Outstanding Achievement'. She was nominated by the WAGGGS Africa Regional Committee, which represents Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from 31 African countries.
Lagos State Executive Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola will officially open the week-long conference, which is expected to end on 17 August. Also due to address the conference, are the Chief Commissioner, Dame Dr. Christie Toby, who will welcome the delegates; Helinoro Rakotomalala, the Chairperson of the Africa Region; and Nadine El-Achy, Chairperson of the World Board.

With a membership of over 10 million members in 145 countries the world over, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is the largest voluntary movement dedicated to girls and young women in the world.
