One African Voice Call on the Humanitarian Situation in the Horn of Africa

Addis Ababa, 5 August 2011 – As part of the African Union’s (AU) efforts to assist the victims of the famine in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, the AU Commission has opened a bank account to receive donations from African Governments, private sector and ordinary African citizens. Towards the Pledging Conference and in order to build momentum, 15th of August has been declared a “One African Voice Call Day” on the humanitarian situation in the Horn of Africa and in Somalia in particular. On this mobilization and sensitization day, the AU intends to reiterate its appeal to Member States, the African private sector, the international community, the Diaspora and all well meaning persons of good will, to donate in kind or in cash so as to provide and increase humanitarian assistance to affected populations in the Horn of Africa.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Dr Jean Ping, appeals to all Member States and other stakeholders to generously contribute to the on-going efforts. In the meantime, preparations are undertaken for the Pledging Conference which will take place on 25th August 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Headquarters of the African Union. In this respect, former President of Ghana and High Representative of the Chairperson of the AU Commission for Somalia, Mr Jerry Rawlings, met with the Chairperson of the Union, Mr. Obiang-Nguema Mbasogo, to consult on the modalities of the Pledging Conference. He is expected to embark on a sensitization and solidarity tour of some capitals across the continent.

The Permanent Representative Council met and expressed appreciation at the decision of the Chairperson of the Assembly of Heads of States and Government for the active role he is playing in Africa’s response to the humanitarian situation.

UN APPEL DE L’AFRIQUE SUR LA SITUATION HUMANITAIRE DANS LA CORNE DE L’AFRIQUE

Addis-Abeba, le 5 août 2011 – Dans le cadre des efforts de l’Union africaine (UA) pour aider les victimes de la famine en Somalie et dans la Corne de l’Afrique, la Commission de l’UA a ouvert un compte bancaire pour recevoir les dons des gouvernements africains, du secteur privé et des citoyens africains. Dans la perspective de la Conférence des donateurs et afin de raffermir la motivation, le 15 août a été déclarée «Journée de l’appel de l’Afrique » sur la situation humanitaire dans la Corne de l’Afrique et en Somalie en particulier. En ce jour de mobilisation et de sensibilisation, l’UA voudrait réitérer son appel aux Etats Membres, au secteur privé africain, à la communauté internationale, à la diaspora et à toutes les personnes de bonne volonté, à faire un don en nature ou en espèce pour acheminer et accroitre l’aide humanitaire aux populations affectées dans la Corne de l’Afrique.

Le Président de la Commission de l’UA, le Dr Jean Ping, invite tous les Etats Membres et les autres parties prenantes à contribuer généreusement aux efforts en cours. Dans le même temps, les préparatifs pour la Conférence des donateurs qui aura lieu le 25 août 2011 à Addis-Abeba en Ethiopie, au siège de l’Union Africaine, sont en cours.

A cet effet, l’ancien Président du Ghana et le Haut Représentant du Président de la Commission de l’UA pour la Somalie, M. Jerry Rawlings, a rencontré le Président de l’Union, M. Obiang-Nguema Mbasogo pour le consulter sur les modalités de la Conférence des donateurs. Il devrait se lancer dans une tournée de sensibilisation et de solidarité dans certaines capitales à travers le continent.

Le Comité des représentants permanents (COREP) s’est réuni et s’est félicité du rôle actif joué le Président de l’UA afin qu’une réponse soit apportée en urgence à la situation humanitaire dans la Corne de l’Afrique.
