Death of Mr. Ebenezer Appreku, Member, African Union Commission on International Law (AUCIL)

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 19 September 2016: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma learnt with profound sadness of the death of Mr. Ebenezer Appreku, Member of the African Union Commission on International Law (AUCIL).

Mr. Appreku was a twice-elected Member of AUCIL, having been first elected in 2009 and re-elected in 2015. In his capacity as a Member of the Commission on International Law, he conducted various studies with a view to developing international law within and outside the continent.

The Late Ebenezer Appreku had also ably served his country, Ghana, in various capacities at the international level including as a Delegate to the UN General Assembly Sixth (Legal) Committee and New-York based expert on the Rome Statute and International Criminal Justice in general. He was well versed in international law practice and diplomacy. As a lawyer enrolled to the Roll of Lawyers of Ghana, Mr. Appreku had over the course of his career developed considerable legal expertise that constituted an invaluable contribution to the profession.

At the time of his death, Mr. Appreku was a Member of the African Union Commission on International Law and the Deputy Permanent Representative, Permanent Mission of the Republic of Ghana to the United Nations Office and other international organizations, Geneva, Switzerland.

On behalf of the African Union, the Chairperson of the Commission expresses her sincere condolences to the family of the late Ebenezer Appreku. She also extends her sympathies to the Government and People of Ghana and the AUCIL that has lost a valuable member.
