AU Commission Chairperson sends condolences to Egypt following the church attacks in Alexandria and Tanta

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 10 April 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat sends his deepest condolences to the Government and people of Egypt following the heinous attacks on two Coptic churches in the cities of Alexandria and Tanta.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission said it is with deep sorrow that he learned of the attacks which took place on Sunday, 9 April 2017, and which left 44 people dead and over 100 injured. On behalf of the African Union and the entire continent, he extended his sympathy and condolences to H.E. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the affected families and the people of Egypt.

Acts of terrorism are a serious threat to the peace and security in the continent and the African Union and its Member States will do their utmost to curb terrorist activities that cause a lot of suffering to the innocent populations.

Africa stands in solidarity with the People of Egypt during these difficult times.
