18 October 2017, Brazzaville: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat arrived in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo today, ahead of the Summit of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Heads of State and Government to take place on 19th October, themed “Fast-Tracking the Implementation of the Pact to Ensure Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region”.

The Chairperson, accompanied by a high level delegation that includes the Commissioner of Peace and Security Smail Chergui, was welcomed by the Prime Minister Clement Mouamba, upon arrival.

This Summit aims to consolidate ongoing efforts by the African Union, SADC, ICLGR and the United Nations to promote peace, security and stability in the Great Lakes Region and address the humanitarian challenges being faced particularly in the DRC, Burundi and CAR.

The Chairperson who recently engaged political stakeholders during a visit to Kinshasa at the end of September, will address the Summit alongside the Heads of State from the sub-region. He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with the present leaders on the margins of the Summit.

The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) is an inter-governmental organization of the countries in the Great Lakes Region. The organization is composed of twelve member states, namely: Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Republic of South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia. Its establishment was based on the recognition that political instability and conflicts in these countries have a considerable regional dimension and thus require a concerted effort in order to promote sustainable peace and development.
