AUC Promotes Disability Mainstreaming and Advances Implementation of Continental Plan of Action

Darkar, Senegal - 23 May 2018: A five-day training on Disability Mainstreaming and Implementation of the Continental Plan of Action on the African Decade of Persons with Disabilities (2010-2019) for AU Member States Officials, was officially opened on Monday 21st May 2018 at Novotel Hotel, Dakar, Senegal. The training is being conducted under the theme “Mainstreaming Disability in Development Policy and Programming” and will be targeting policy and decision makers and will also equip them with skills and knowledge to mainstream disability for inclusive development in their respective positions.

During the opening ceremony, solidarity statements on disability were made encouraging regional collaboration on disability, promotion of disability mainstreaming and acknowledgement that disability is an evolving concept; as well the protection and upholding of disability rights under the African Regional system. Disability in the AU Agenda 2063 and SDG was noted and highlighted.
Participants are drawn from AU Member States that include Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Chad, Eritrea, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Libya, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Saharawi Republic, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sudan and also National Disability Organisations in Senegal.

Senegal was chosen as a host of this training as an African Union Disability Architecture Project Partner Implementing Member State on Intra-Africa Technical Cooperation on Disability Mainstreaming.
