Addis Ababa, 16 July 2019: On 10 July 2019, the African Union Administrative Tribunal swore in three new judges to serve a four-year term in the indepdent body entrusted with providing internal justice mechanism to staff members of the African Union.

The new judges were appointed by the Executive Council during its 34th Ordinary Session held in February 2019 in Addis Ababa.

The new judges are, Honorable Jamila Bourhim Sedqi of the Kingdom of Morocco, Honorable Sylvester Salufu Mainga of the Republic of Namibia andHonorable Dr. Paulo Daniel Comoane of the Repulic of Mozambique.

The new judges bring with them many years of distinguished public service as highly skilled judicial professionals in their respective countries and internationally.

The curent President of the African Union Administrative Tribunal, the Honorable Andrew K.C. Nyirenda and the Honorable Judge Shaheda Peeroo both welcomed the new judges during the investiture ceremony held at the African Union Comission headquarters. The ceremony included a presentation on ethics policies of the African Union by the Chief of Ethics of the African Union.

In his opening statement, President Judge Nyirenda congratulated the new judges and assured them of his panel’s full support during the transition and beyond in making sure that the work of the Tribunal is done with independence and impartiality. “I am very confident that you will discharge your duties as judges effectively to the benefit of all and that the African Union will support you all the way in this important mission” he added.

The outgoing Panel led by President Judge Nyirenda has been very instrumental in revitilising the Administrative Tribunal and through out its tenure made great progress in resolving staff applications.

The African Union Administrative Tribunal, set up in 1967, is an independent body with jurisdiction to adjudicate employment-related disputes arising between staff members and the African Union. The judges of the Tribunal are nominated by member states and appointed by the Executive Council of the African Union for a term of four years.
