Statement of the Chairperson on an attack on AMISOM troops in Somalia
Addis Abeba,16 September 2019:The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat strongly condemns the attack perpetrated against a contingent from Burundi of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in the Hirshabelle region on 14 September 2019 that led to a number of casualties.
The Chairperson salutes the courage of the Burundian peacekeepers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty to protect and support our Somali brothers and sisters and their national institutions.
The Chairperson wishes to extend his most sincere condolences to the bereaved families and the Government of the Republic of Burundi, and wishes a quick recovery to the injured AMISOM peacekeepers.
The Chairperson reaffirms that the AU remains committed to working with the Government of Somalia to further consolidate peace and security in the country.
The Chairperson further calls on the international community to provide appropriate support to Somalia and AMISOM to consolidate security gains in the country.
