What: Africa CDC Public Health Grand Rounds
The topic of discussion for this second event in the series is: “The Role of National Public Health Institutes in Health Security”.

Why: National Public Health Institutes are critical in implementing the International Health Regulations to ensure the health security of the continent. The distinguished panelists will discuss the opportunities and gaps in addressing this critical public health need.

Who: Organized by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (AfricaCDC)

Objectives: Raise awareness about the roles, responsibilities and actions of the African Union and its Member States in accelerating implementation of the International Health Regulation, and promote partnerships between the African Union Commission organs, African Union Member States and partners to strengthen public health programmes and institutions in Africa.

Public health in Africa is improving rapidly, but disease threats remain a big risk.
Safeguarding Africa’s health against disease threats is imperative particularly
with the implementation of the International Health Regulations and other African
Union policy frameworks that deals with health issues across the continent.
This seminar will discuss how Africa can improve its public health systems by building vibrant National Public Health Institutes to prepare and rapidly respond in times of outbreak. It provides a unique opportunity for multisectoral discussions by experts from the public health and other development sectors on how to bridge the gaps in public health in Africa vis-à-vis the continental and global development agendas.
