What: The 10th Annual Humanitarian Symposium

Theme: Advancing the outcome of Malabo Humanitarian Summit and pledging Conference

When: 14 – 16 December 2022

Where: Movenpick hotel, Nairobi, Kenya

Who: The Department of Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development of the African Union Commission (AUC), in collaboration AU Humanitarian Partners, namely, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Why: The Annual Humanitarian Symposium was institutionalized in 2013 as a forum for policymakers and practitioners from Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Donors, UN Agencies, African and International Humanitarian Organizations, and the other stakeholders such as Think Tanks, Academia, Civil Society, Youth, Affected Population, the Diaspora, Innovators, the Social and Private Sector, and the larger global humanitarian community to discuss and collaborate on humanitarian challenges/ actions in Africa.

According to the Assembly Decision on 27 May 2022, which requested the AU Commission to formulate a Plan of Action for the implementation of the outcomes of the 15th Extraordinary Humanitarian Summit and Pledging Conference organized on May 2022, the symposium will be dedicated to the Post Malabo Action Plan to be developed by the AU Commission and submitted to the upcoming Assembly of Heads of States and Government, scheduled in February 2023.

Objectives:

The Symposium provides the opportunity to dialogue with AU on how it can better deliver and support humanitarian action on the continent.

The objectives of the 10th Annual AU Humanitarian Symposium are:

  • Identify critical elements of the proposed 10-year AU Plan of Action based on the Malabo Declaration;
  • Propose a draft Roadmap for the implementation of the 10-Year AU Plan of Action;
  • Dialogue and engage with stakeholders on trends and patterns of humanitarian situation in Africa and to identify necessary areas of synergies at national, regional and international levels that could support the achievement of the AU humanitarian agenda in the next 10 years.

Expected Outcomes:

The following outputs are envisaged from the 10th Humanitarian Symposium:

  • Highlights of the outcomes and timelines, for the 10-year Plan of Action and propose synergies, tools and mechanisms for the implementation of the plan;
  • Identify partnerships and resources necessary to complement the implementation of the 10-year Plan of Action.

Thematic Focus of the Symposium:

  1. Humanitarian challenges and response in Africa.
  2. Climate change, disasters, and forced displacement in Africa.
  3. Africa in the Global Humanitarian Arena.
  4. Food Security and nutrition in Humanitarian situation.
  5. Pandemic and health challenges in humanitarian space in Africa.
  6. Resource mobilization and financing humanitarian actions in Africa: Follow-up of the Malabo Pledging Conference and beyond.
