From Algorithms to Accountability: 4th Africa Media Convention Sets Agenda for Informed Use of AI in Journalism

The 4th Africa Media Convention (AMC4) is set to take center stage in Marrakech, Morocco, from May 29–31, 2025, bringing together the continent’s most influential media voices to tackle one of the most pressing issues of our time: Artificial Intelligence and its impact on African journalism. Held as part of the World Press Freedom Day commemorations, this year’s convention will serve as a critical platform for journalists, policymakers, tech innovators, and civil society leaders to explore how AI is reshaping press freedom, access to information, and the sustainability of media across Africa. With the theme “AI, Press Freedom, and Access to Information: Navigating the Future of African Media,”the AMC promises to deliver thought-provoking discussions, actionable strategies, and groundbreaking collaborations.

As AI rapidly transforms global media landscapes, African journalists and media stakeholders face both unprecedented opportunities and challenges. From automated news generation to the risks of deepfakes and algorithmic bias, the technology is redefining how information is produced, distributed, and consumed. Against this backdrop, the AMC 2025 will provide a unique space for African-led solutions, ensuring that the continent’s media ecosystem remains resilient, ethical, and independent. The convention will also examine homegrown digital frameworks, advocate for policies that safeguard press freedom, inclusivity, and explore sustainable business models to future-proof journalism.

Delegates can expect in-depth keynote presentations, high-level panels, interactive workshops, and networking sessions featuring leading media experts, AI developers, and government representatives. Key topics include:

AI’s ethical dilemmas in journalism and fact-checking
Legal protections for press freedom in the digital age
African innovation in media technology and storytelling
Funding models to ensure independent journalism thrives

Key outcome will be the adoption of the Marrakech Declaration on AI, Press Freedom and Access to Information - a document establishing principles for responsible AI adoption in African media, The Declaration will address critical gaps in AI governance while preserving press freedoms and indigenous innovation.

Building on previous AMC declarations from Accra (2024), Lusaka (2023), and Arusha (2022), this year's document will be formally presented to the Specialized Technical Committee on Communication and ICT of the African Union during their October 2025 ministerial meeting, informing pan-African policy development and action.
