The African Union warmly welcomes the announcement of the historic agreement between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Republic of Mauritius concerning the exercise of sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, alongside the establishment of a new Strategic Partnership Framework.

This significant development marks a new era in the bilateral relations between the two countries, reflecting their strong historical ties and shared commitment to peace, security, and sustainable development. The African Union applauds the comprehensive scope of this partnership, which covers critical areas such as economic growth, trade, maritime security, climate action, governance, and regional cooperation.

The emphasis on boosting mutual trade and investment, supporting Mauritius’s ambition to become a high-income country, and enhancing climate resilience is particularly commendable. These initiatives are not only vital for Mauritius but also contribute positively to the stability and prosperity of the wider Indian Ocean region.

Moreover, the focus on strengthening the international rules-based system, combating corruption and illicit finance, and addressing irregular migration aligns closely with the African Union’s priorities for sustainable peace and security across the continent.

This strategic partnership serves as a promising model of international cooperation grounded in respect for sovereignty, shared values, and a vision for inclusive growth. The African Union looks forward to the successful implementation of this Framework and to continued collaboration with Mauritius and its partners in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity across Africa and beyond.
