New York City Hosts African Union – USA Flag Raising on Africa Day May 25th

Flag-raising of the African Union (AU) symbol alongside the flags of countries and organisations at national, regional, continental and international levels is a highly significant action as it promotes the vision, missions, programs and flagship projects of the African Union, as well as the Africa Agenda 2063, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and shared goals among nations.

It is against this backdrop that the traditional African Union Flag Raising ceremony was held on 25 May 2025 in New York City at Bowling Green, as part of the activities marking the commemoration of the Africa Day in the USA. This symbolic event is organized every year by the Office of the Mayor of the City of New York, Mr. Eric Adams.

The Flag-Raising of the African Union took place in the presence of the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, the Permanent Observer of the African Union to the United Nations, Amb. Fatima Kyari Mohammed, the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States of America, Amb. Hilda Suka-Mafudze, the Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the UN, Amb. Tesfaye Yilma Sabo, who is also the Chair of the African Group for the month of May, members of the diplomatic community, representatives of the NYC Government and invited guests.

It is worth noting that, flag-raising on Africa Day is important as it celebrates the vibrant community from the African Diaspora in the USA in general, recognizing the contributions of the African Union to global society. Furthermore, it is a celebration of African identity, resilience, and the shared goals of peace and development, fostering a sense of community both locally and globally. It serves as a powerful symbol of unity among African nations and their diaspora, underscoring the importance of collaboration and mutual support in addressing global challenges.

Flag raising acknowledges the rich cultural heritage and diversity of the African continent. It celebrates the achievements of African nations and their people, advocates for peace, security, and sustainable development in Africa. It inspires the younger generations, encouraging them to take pride in their African heritage and to be active participants in shaping the continent's future.

Flag-raising also reinforces the message that African countries stand together in pursuit of common goals, fostering a sense of collective identity, enhances the visibility of African nations and their contributions to global affairs, draws attention to the continent's achievements, challenges, and potential, countering stereotypes and misconceptions, emphasizes the importance of diplomatic ties between African nations and the international community and their respective roles in the pursuit of economic growth and stability, exemplifying the spirit of cooperation that the African Union embodies.

AU flag-raising engages the African diaspora, reminding them of the importance of their contributions to both their host countries and the continent, fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility toward Africa.
