The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has appointed Ambassador Liberata Mulamula as the new Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security (WPS).

Ambassador Mulamula is a distinguished diplomat, peacebuilder, and advocate for gender equality, bringing more than 35 years of experience in diplomacy, governance, and conflict resolution. She has served in a number of senior positions, including as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Republic of Tanzania and Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).

As Special Envoy, Ambassador Mulamula will lead the Commission’s efforts to advance the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, working closely with AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), civil society, and development partners to promote women’s full and meaningful participation in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and post-conflict recovery. “I am honored to assume this responsibility at a time when African women’s voices and leadership are crucial for peace and security on our continent. My priority is to listen, especially to women in conflict-affected communities, and to foster inclusive partnerships that accelerate progress on our shared WPS goals,” said Ambassador Mulamula.

The African Union commends the outgoing team and partners for their unwavering commitment to advancing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, and calls on all stakeholders to continue supporting this vital work for sustainable peace and development across Africa.
