African Union’s 51st Permanent Representatives’ Committee Session concludes

The African Union’s Committee of Permanent Representatives (PRC) successfully concluded its 51^st Ordinary Session today in Addis Ababa, following two weeks of intensive discussions aimed at advancing the continent’s Agenda 2063.

The session finalized draft agendas and work programs in preparation for the upcoming meetings of the Executive Council and the Assembly of Heads of State and Government. Key continental priorities were addressed, encompassing peace and security, governance, inclusive economic growth, education, health, and Africa’s positioning in global affairs.

Speaking on behalf of AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Deputy Chairperson H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi opened the session by commending the PRC’s diligent work under the leadership of its Chair, H.E. Ambassador Miguel César Domingos Bembé of Angola. She praised the committee’s constructive and consensus-based approach, which facilitated a thorough review of the agenda.

Amb. Haddadi highlighted the significance of the AU’s 2026 theme: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.” “By refining this year’s focus on water and sanitation, you have underscored water’s critical role in Africa’s development - its diverse uses and its growing importance as a global geopolitical issue,” stated H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi.

On administrative and financial matters, Amb. Haddadi expressed satisfaction with the committee’s commitment to transparency, accountability, efficiency, and effectiveness. She urged the PRC to implement measures that would enhance the operational standards of the AU Commission and other Union organs.

In his remarks, PRC Chair Amb. Prof. Miguel Bembe emphasized the importance of unity, multilateralism, and collective action. He thanked Member States and the AU Commission for their support and offered full backing to the Republic of Burundi as it assumes the AU’s rotating chairmanship for 2026 under the water and sanitation theme.

The closing ceremony was attended by AU Commissioners, representatives from AU organs, and senior officials. The ambassadors reviewed various reports, including those from PRC sub-committees, the AU Commission, and specialized agencies, before finalizing their session report and draft decisions for the 48^th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, scheduled for February 11, 2026.
