The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, this afternoon received H.E. Hon. Chief Charumbira, President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), & Members of the PAP Bureau at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The Chairperson commended PAP’s vital role within the institutional architecture of the AU, underscoring its mandate as a key platform for citizen representation & democratic participation in continental governance, as envisaged in the Abuja Treaty.

In the context of ongoing AU institutional reforms, he emphasised the importance of strengthening PAP as a rules-based, credible & effective organ, operating in full alignment with its founding texts & established procedures. He encouraged the Bureau to advance timely electoral processes & institutional consolidation to enhance accountability, predictability, & impact.

Hon. Chief Charumbira expressed appreciation for the constructive engagement & reaffirmed PAP’s commitment to working closely with the Chairperson & AU policy organs in advancing the Union’s agenda.
