The African Union Commission (AUC), through the Department of Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, has launched the Strategic Framework for the Prevention and Management of Anaemia in Africa, a continental roadmap aimed at accelerating efforts to reduce the burden of anaemia across Africa.

Anaemia remains a major public health challenge on the continent, affecting women, children, and vulnerable populations, with far-reaching consequences for health, education, productivity, and socio-economic development. The Framework responds to the urgent need for coordinated, evidence-based and multi-sectoral action to address the complex causes of anaemia in Africa.

Aligned with the Africa Regional Nutrition Strategy (ARNS), the Africa Health Strategy 2016–2030, and Agenda 2063, the Framework seeks to support African Union Member States in achieving a 50 percent reduction in anaemia among adolescent girls and women of reproductive age by 2035.

The Strategic Framework outlines five priority action areas:

  • Analysing data on the causes and risk factors of anaemia for informed decision-making;
  • Prioritising key preventive and therapeutic interventions;
  • Strengthening integrated service delivery platforms across sectors;
  • Enhancing governance, leadership, partnerships and accountability mechanisms; and
  • Improving evidence-based knowledge generation and dissemination on anaemia prevention and control.

Developed through extensive consultations with AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), technical experts and development partners, the Framework emphasizes country-led, context-specific solutions that address micronutrient deficiencies, infections, maternal health conditions, inherited blood disorders, food insecurity, and broader socio-economic determinants of health.

The AUC calls upon Member States, partners, civil society, and stakeholders across sectors to strengthen collaboration and accelerate investments in anaemia prevention and management to advance the vision of a healthier, well-nourished and prosperous Africa.
