Addis Ababa, 14 June 2019: Amb. Kwesi Quartey, Deputy Chair of the African Union Commission (AUC), held a meeting with the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Mr. Tibor Nagy, and the US Special Envoy to the Sudan, Amb. Donald Booth. The two were accompanied by the US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mary Beth Leonard.

The two sides exchanged views on the events unfolding in Sudan and deliberated on how the US could complement the efforts of the AU to facilitate the process of restoring calm to the country.

It would be recalled that on June 3, 2019, the AU issued a communique condemning the violence which led to the deaths and injury of several civilians.
The Deputy Chair reiterated that the African Union continue to stand with the people of Sudan, and was working with the Transitional Authority and all interested parties to speed up the process of producing a timetable and a road map to return the country to peace.

Amb. Quartey expressed appreciation to the US for its continuous support to the AU. He urged the country to share ideas and intelligence to facilitate the reinstitution of democratic practices in Sudan.

The Deputy Chair, however, emphasized that the underlying problem which led to the unrest in Sudan is poverty. He therefore urged that beyond restoring calm, concrete measures needed to be taken to support Sudan’s economic growth which would lead to shared prosperity among its people. He expressed confidence in the ability of Amb. Donald Booth and wished him the very best in his mission.

Mr. Nagy said he had faith and full confidence in the African Union to lead this process. He assured the Deputy Chair of the unflinching support of the United States and its total commitment to bringing calm to Sudan.
