Addis Abeba, 13 December 2018 – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat received on official visit Mr. Peter Mauer, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), at the AU Commission Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia today.
Chairperson Faki commended ICRC’s engagement across the world, especially in Africa, where unfortunately, the issues such as Human Right, Peace and security and Migration are still prominent. He called on ICRC to extend its collaboration to tackle these challenges, particularly during 2019, which has been designated by the AU as the year of “Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons in Africa: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced Displacement”.
In this regard, Mr. Mauer reiterated ICRC’s commitment to the strategic partnership with the AU Commission. He presented the various planned ICRC’s programs that could be done jointly with the AU Commission towards humanitarian relief for the most vulnerable in Africa. Mr. Mauer shared his plans to visit the Sahel next year to sign an MoU on cooperation with various African countries. During this visit, he will be accompanied by Representatives of the private sector and Investors.
The two High Officials concluded on recommitting to deepening the over 26 years of partnership and cooperation between the two institutions in order to further improve the humanitarian situation in the continent as well as advance good governance and multilateralism.
