The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, concluded a two-day working visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt yesterday. The Chairperson was received by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, where the two leaders discussed a number of issues including the African Union Summit that will be held on 6 and 7 February 2021, as well as the peace and security situation on the Continent, including in the Sahel, Libya, and the Horn of Africa. They stressed the importance of moving forward on plans for continental integration, notably through trade and cross-border infrastructure. Chairperson Faki thanked President el-Sisi for Egypt’s support to the African Union on all fronts.

Chairperson Moussa Faki met with Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, where the two discussed the progress on the Reform of the African Union (AU), as well as on “Silencing the Guns” in Africa, the AU’s response to COVID-19, and Egypt’s support to the African Continent through the AU.

The Chairperson met with Defense Minister Mohamed Zaki, where they discussed joint cooperation in support of the AU’s Silencing the Guns initiative. He also met with the Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament, Judge Hanafy El-Gebali, who expressed commitment for Africa’s development and prosperity through cooperation with the African Union.

The Chairperson also held the 9th General Cooperation Meeting of the Africa-Arab Partnership with the Secretary General of the League of Arab States (LAS), on 1 February 2021, at the premises of the LAS General Secretariat.
