Ministerial Meeting: Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment.

 

What: The 7th Specialised Technical Committee on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) convened to scale up actions on commitments to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

When: 13th December 2022. 9am GMT+1: 11am EAT.

Where: The Ministerial Meeting will be convened virtually on - https://zoom.us/j/98244223412?pwd=U1VVT1cxZUFvVFJIRTlZTWVHbXdiZz09

Who: Convened by the African Union Commission Directorate of Women, Gender and Development, the meeting will bring together African Union Ministers in charge of Gender and Women’s Affairs and their Experts. Other participants including among others, Regional Economic Communities, AU Organs and Specialized Agencies.

The meeting will among others:

  • Adopt decisions on the Fund for African Women and Trust Fund for African Women
  • Adopt a decision on outcomes of the 2nd AU Men’s Conference on Positive Masculinity in Leadership to End Violence Against Women and Girls
  • Consider and adopt the 2021 Reports of the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa (SDGEA)
  • Consider and adopt the Roadmap of the Decade on Financial and Economic Inclusion of Women 2020-2030
  • Adopt the Gender Observatory as a reporting mechanism

Background information.

The Specialised Technical Committee on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) is a Ministerial gathering mandated to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment in Africa. The STC leads, among other things, the formulation of decisions, policies and African Common Positions; advocacy for the ratification, implementation and domestication of the African Union legal and policy instruments; advocacy at national, continental and global levels; fund raising in support of the African Union’s gender agenda; advocacy for the protection, promotion and respect of women’s human rights; and promotion of sharing and learning of best practices among Member States. The Ministers will prioritize statutory matters as well as urgent and important AU Gender Agenda issues that require Ministerial consideration, adoption and decisions.
